Tips to lighten up your place:

One is not enough: A common lighting mistake is thinking one light is sufficient for an entire room. A room needs different light sources for different tasks, Hansen said. A torchiere will add general, or ambient, light to a room, but you also need a table lamp for reading, he said. If you need to adjust the lighting, buy lamps with dimmer switches.

Light for the occasion: "You want different light if you're just entertaining for the evening," he said. "Sitting down having conversations, you want mood. You don't want glaring light everywhere."

Change shades: If you have enough lamps but want to make everything feel brighter, swap out old, yellowing lampshades for new ones. Replacing the old shade also gives the lamp and the room an updated look for less. Hansen suggests cream shades for the nice quality of light that shines through them.

Switch bulbs: Another cost-efficient fix is to replace incandescent light bulbs with halogen bulbs, which have a clean, bright light. Fluorescent bulbs are a good option for energy efficiency, but most of the bulbs don't emit as much light.

Very useful information for some. Allow me to point out one thing, dont over light a room even if you bought a few nice lamps. As it can cause headaces and change the mood of the room.

How about chandelier lamps. Are there cost efficient lamps or bulbs which can be used without really distorting chandelier lamps' effects?

There are these new flourescent bulbs that don't light up like the old ones do. They are a lot brighter, energy efficient, and can last up to a couple years! They are more expensive then regular bulbs, but for the amount of energy you save, it's worth it

Lighting a room can be tricky at times. On the one hand I don't want too much lighting, but I don't want it to be dark either.

Personally I prefer allowing in a lot of natural lighting. Over on the main site we have this article on natural lighting if you are interested.

Lighting could also be placed higher up along the ceiling. That way you get a diffused look and save room on furniture tops. With a dimmer switch you can adjust for whatever mood you choose.

When I purchased my new house, there was a basic lighting system. Each room had only one light, weather small or big. I changed it and installed many options. I can't live without full light.

Thanks for the info.
Using of Incandescent light bulb is also good..An electric current passes through a thin filament, heating it until it produces light..

Also, you'll find that flourescent light is "whiter" than incadensent light and make the room appear differently

You can also get away with darker walls if your ceiling and trim are contrasting lighter colors.
